Jacob Rothschild Cause Of Death
Lord Jacob Rothschild, a wealthy businessman, humanitarian, and head of the famous Rothschild family fortune, has died at the age of 87. No cause of death was given. In a statement released on Monday, his family announced his passing and paid tribute to the patriarch, who has served in a variety of prominent financial and charitable capacities, calling him a “towering presence.”
As per the Sunday Times Rich List from the previous year, the Rothschilds are believed to be worth £825 million. They are known to donate £66 million annually to Jewish charities, art, and education.
The British peer began his career in 1963 with the family bank, NM Rothschild & Sons. He later left the company in 1980 and co-founded J Rothschild Assurance Group, which is now St. James’s Place, in 1991.
Serena, to whom Lord Rothschild was married for almost 50 years, passed away in 2019. She left behind four children: Nat, Hannah, Beth, and Emily, as well as several grandchildren. Hannah, the daughter of Lord Rothschild, will take over as the charity’s head, the Rothschild Foundation revealed.
“Our father Jacob was a towering presence in many people’s lives, a superbly accomplished financier, a champion of the arts and culture, a devoted public servant, a passionate supporter of charitable causes in Israel and Jewish culture, a keen environmentalist and much-loved friend, father, and grandfather,” his family said in a statement announcing his passing.
“A memorial service to honor his life will be held at a later time, and he will be buried in accordance with Jewish custom in a small family ceremony.”
In addition, he established Windmill Hill Asset Management to oversee the family’s charitable holdings. He held the positions of chairman of the National Lottery Heritage Fund and chairman of the trustees of the National Gallery in the cultural sector.
A well-known art supporter, he also sat for several portraits, notably those by David Hockney and Lucian Freud, and chaired the board of trustees for the charitable Rothschild Foundation. The National Gallery also posted a tribute on Twitter which can be seen below:
